The Sculptor

Maryon Attwood

Person wearing a red and black checkered shirt examining small ceramic houses outdoors.

I planned and trained to be a painter … and find that I am now primarily a sculptor. I am making all kinds of forms, including flameware Platters, with a variety of materials and integrating color and texture as each sculpture takes shape. My ceramic spirit houses and historically-inspired busts are fired multiple times to achieve the layering of color used in traditional painting techniques. As a granddaughter of Glasgow, I am inspired by human history, the legend from the highlands, and rich Celtic culture. I am unearthing messages from the past and re-interpreting to a contemporary audience.

Wherever I have lived, I have been an engaged member of my community. Because my grandparents were immigrants, I was taught that it was part of my responsibility as a citizen to create supportive community. I have served in public office, organized legislative bills that created an office of state archaeology in Connecticut and an Organic Farm Program at the Washington State University, founded an organic farm school and a local organic brand, and served on many local non-profit boards. And I vote!
