Soda Fire Workshop

Expand Your Surface Vocabulary in a Soda Kiln
August 2 - 7, 2026 : $1150

includes instruction + slips + glazes + firing

The soda kiln offers exciting opportunities to explore the surfaces of our pots in direct relationship to the form while allowing the soda application and atmospheric activity to influence the outcome.

A soda ash solution is introduced into the kiln at the apex of the cone 9/10 reduction firing, vaporizing in the atmosphere, and giving each pot a varied and unique surface.

Students bring 10-20 bisque pots (depending upon size), made with cone 9/10 clays. We’ll use slips and glazes with various resist techniques to create patterns or imagery, emphasizing the relationship between the glazed and unglazed glazed areas on your pots.

Participants are fully hands-on in loading, firing, unloading, and after-firing tasks.

* Day 1 + 2 – glaze + wad + load + light
* Day 3 - fire
* Day 4 + 5 - kiln cools + demos + field trip or free time
* Day 6 - unload + discuss results + after-firing tasks

Participants arrange their own housing (we can recommend local lodging options). Inns, motels, campgrounds, beaches, hiking trails, farmers markets, and many restaurants nearby.
